Two Very Different Ecommerce Business Models

When people say "I want to build an ecommerce website in Bangladesh," they usually mean one of two things:

  • Single-vendor shop: You sell your own products. One seller (you), many customers. Like CutPriceBD.com or any brand's own online store.
  • Multi-vendor marketplace: Multiple sellers list their products on your platform. You take a commission on each sale. Like Daraz Bangladesh, but smaller and niche-focused.

The technology, cost, and operational complexity are completely different. This guide helps you decide which model fits your situation.

Single-Vendor Shop — When to Choose It

Choose a single-vendor shop if:

  • You manufacture or source your own products
  • You want to control quality, pricing, and branding completely
  • You're starting with a focused product category (fashion, health, food)
  • Budget is under ৳50,000 and you want to be live quickly
  • You don't want to manage seller relationships or disputes

Revenue model: You buy products at wholesale and sell at retail. Simple profit = sell price minus buy price minus shipping.

Cost: ৳15,000–60,000 for a well-built single-vendor shop with bKash, Nagad, and courier integration.

Multi-Vendor Marketplace — When to Choose It

Choose a multi-vendor marketplace if:

  • You don't want to hold inventory yourself
  • You want to aggregate sellers from a specific niche (e.g., artisan handicrafts, local farm produce)
  • You have the capacity to onboard sellers, verify products, and resolve disputes
  • You have a plan to bring traffic to support multiple sellers
  • Budget is ৳75,000+ and you're building for the medium term

Revenue model: Commission per sale (typically 5–15% in Bangladesh). You don't buy products; you facilitate sales between sellers and buyers.

Cost: ৳75,000–1,50,000+ depending on features. More complex admin panels — one for platform admin, one for each seller.

The Hidden Challenge of Multi-Vendor

Most people underestimate how hard it is to launch a marketplace. The technology is the easy part. The hard parts are:

  • Chicken-and-egg problem: Sellers won't join if there are no buyers. Buyers won't come if there are no sellers.
  • Quality control: If a seller lists a fake product and a buyer complains, your platform takes the blame.
  • Payout complexity: When a customer buys from 3 different sellers in one order, you must split the payment correctly.
  • Dispute resolution: Seller says it was delivered. Buyer says it wasn't. You're in the middle.

Our recommendation: if you're under ৳1 crore annual revenue target, start with a single-vendor shop in your niche first. Build demand. Then open it to other sellers later.
